French and English are the languages of the summer camp. Because our students come from many different countries, our school strives to be open to the world. The summer camp is, therefore, an opportunity for young people to make new friends, exchange experiences, and broaden their vision. It is in this spirit that the school is affiliated with the Associated Schools Project ( ASP ) of UNESCO, which works for education based on peace and tolerance. For 50 years ENSR has organised a summer camp for boys and girls from 9 to 16 years of age. Each year in July and August our new chalet in Champéry welcomes young people interested in experiencing the great Swiss outdoors while studying French or English.
Our camp is located in this idyllic setting – perfect for studying and walking and mountain-biking. Champéry has many indoor and outdoor sports facilities. With its new sports centre, the village offers a large range of activities : sports lessons, clay courts, swimming ( both indoors and outdoors in a heated pool ), and ice skating. Ecole Nouvelle’s summer camp offers campers the opportunity to learn or to brush up on their French or English. The school’s approach to language-teaching helps the child enjoy learning because it stresses the practical rather than the theoretical. Before the students’ first lesson, we determine their linguistic proficiency and discuss with them what they hope to get out of their stay with us. There are four lessons of 45 minutes each morning from Monday to Friday and two on Saturday. We organize 22 hours of French or English lessons per week. Classes are kept small – from 4 to 7 students – in order to promote the active participation of each student and to allow us to offer an individualised programme. At the end of the camp, the students receive a certificate attesting to their work and the progress they have made.
Hiking isn’t the only sport ENSR offers, of course. Campers can also practise climbing, mountainbiking, adventure parks, adventure labyrinths, archery, beach volley, ping pong, bowling, laser games, minigolf, soccer, unihockey, and skating. The aquatic centre has water slides and a relaxing heated swimming pool. There are around 50 different sports activities in all. Other outings are more educational in nature. Visits to Lausanne ( the Olympic Museum ), Montreux (the Jazz Festival, the Château de Chillon) and Martigny ( the Gianadda Foundation ) are just a few of the numerous cultural activities we organize each week, depending on the weather. On request, we can arrange other activities : tennis, horseback riding, canyoning ( with written permission from the parents ). During their stay in Champéry, campers are always accompanied by teachers and instructors from the school. Close supervision of their activities allows us to ensure their security while fostering their spirit of adventure. Excursions are led by experts who know the geography and climate of the region well. Activities like canyoning and rock climbing are monitored by experienced professionals.
