The International Boarding School of Lausanne, founded by Edouard Vittoz in 1906, has embraced Ferrière’s philosophy and adapted it to the needs of our time. The mission of the school is to prepare its students to become world citizens and lead a full and active life. In addition to encouraging curiosity and freedom of thought, we seek to instil a spirit of initiative, a desire for excellence and a strong sense of commitment. Since then, the pedagogy of the school has clearly developed along with changes in society. However, the fundamental principles have remained the same. The International Boarding School comprises a kindergarten (including a Montessori section), a primary school, a middle school and a senior school, which prepares students for the Swiss Maturité or the International Baccalaureate diplomas. A place of tranquil exuberance The active teaching methods used at the International Boarding School of Lausanne are centred on the child and stimulate the desire to learn. Our goal is to develop thoughtful reasoning rather than the accumulation of memorised facts. In the words of our founder, Edouard Vittoz, we seek to foster “individuality through flexible adaptation of educational programmes and the promotion of joyful collaboration.” The competence of the academic staff, directed study periods, regular personalised reports, and programmes tailored to the needs and development of each individual build a strong bond of trust between students and teachers. The result is the well-being of the students and success in their exams. Set in the heart of a region for winter and water sports and overlooking Lausanne and the beautiful Lake of Geneva, the verdant campus of the school offers its students an agreeable and secure environment. The window on the the world Because our students come from many different cultures, the International Boarding School of Lausanne strives to be open to the world. In this spirit, the school acts within the spirit of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Multilingualism plays an important role in the school curriculum. English is introduced in kindergarten, used daily in the primary school and taught in standard and accelerated groups from grades 5 to 12. Students begin German in 4th grade. In 9th grade, courses in Italian and Spanish give students the opportunity to further broaden their linguistic and cultural horizons. The Internationl Boarding School was one of the very first schools to offer the International Baccalau-reate. The IB Diploma (available in French or bilingual English-French) is accepted by Swiss and foreign universities, in particular those in the English speaking world. Within the IB programme, students are offered the opportunity to study yet more languages, which is particularly interesting for our many international students who are interested in knowing more about their own mother tongues and literature. In addition, the school offers non-Frenchspeaking students FLE (French as a foreign language) courses, the goal of which is rapid integration into our regular programme. Highlights
