Open MRI Breast cancer screening Diabetology – metabolic diseases – nutrition Diabetes is a metabolic disease characterised by high levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood. The main underlying abnormality in diabetes is a disruption of the secretion or utilisation of insulin, which can be caused by numerous factors. Diabetes is a common illness that affects 300,000 individuals in Switzerland, 53 million in Europe and 200 million worldwide. Substantial numbers of new cases are observed each year (20,000 a year in Switzerland). This increase, both in Switzerland and worldwide, is large enough to be described by the WHO as one of "epidemic" proportions. Another current major metabolic problem is obesity. Obesity has become a public health problem in Switzerland as well, with 1/3 of its population being considered overweight. Even the youngest are affected (among children aged 3 to 16 some 3.5% are obese and 14% overweight). Since obesity is directly related to the onset of chronic disorders such as diabetes, hypertension and elevated blood lipids (cholesterol), early management is crucially important. The complex follow-up requires a multidisciplinary approach involving specially trained professionals (endocrinologists, internists, nutritionists). The Clinique de Montchoisi and its specialists now offer a Diabetology – Metabolism - Nutrition Unit for the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of these conditions with the aim of avoiding the serious complications that can result (cardiovascular, ophthalmological, nephrological diseases etc.). On the other hand, patients who are already diagnosed with diabetes can be accommodated in the ideal environment prior to a surgical intervention and thus minimize any postoperative complications. Ear, nose and throat medicine (ENT) The ENT specialist examines patients’ hearing, sense of balance, smell and taste with sophisticated equipment allowing the physician to diagnose the disorder with precision. The surgical methods treat certain hearing disorder, snoring, nasal polyps, chronic sinusitis and recurrent ENT infections as well as malignant or benign tumours. Urology Urology treats disorders of the urinary tract in men as well as women: disorders of the kidney (kidney stones, tumors), bladder, prostate, masculine impotence and sterility, incontinence. Urology is a complex specialty which deals with a sensitive subject. Outpatient neuropsychological consultation As a neuroscience, neuropsychology is a discipline studying the relationships between brain activity and cognitive, behavioural and emotional functioning. More specifically, in a clinical context it employs standardized tests to evaluate cognitive skills (memory, language, attention, etc.) after a cerebral lesion (cerebrovascular accident, craniocerebral trauma, neurodegenerative disorder, inflammatory disorders of the central nervous system, tumours, epilepsy, etc.). These tests are designed to produce a neuropsychological profile (showing the functional abilities and deficits) in order to provide an appropriate treatment to the patient. A consultation lasts approximately three hours, and the rehabilitation sessions about an hour. Hand surgery A wide variety of pathological conditions affects the hand and wrist. These may be secondary to rheumatic disorders - such as arthritis of the thumb - or congenital illnesses. They are often secondary to trauma, particularly trauma involving the wrist. In fact, since we don't "walk" on our hands, a problem with the wrist often goes unnoticed. Arthroscopy of the wrist facilitates the early diagnosis of lesions that are usually discovered only at an advanced stage (pseudoarthrosis of the scaphoid, lesions of the scapholunate and triangular ligaments…) and, in particular, their treatment via the arthroscopic route, i.e. without scars. This technique can also be used to treat familiar lesions in a much more satisfactory manner for patients. Neurosurgery Neurosurgery deals with problems affecting the brain and nerves. The neurosurgeon works with the neurologist to identify the origin of problems caused by disorders of the nervous system. He may operate on brain tumours, spinal tumours, herniated cervical and lumbar discs and brain haemorrhages and can also provide surgical relief from pain. Surgery of this type is performed with microsurgical techniques under an operating microscope to obtain the best results. Microsurgery makes operations more accurate and less traumatic. Rehabilitation for neurosurgery patients is subsequently provided by specialists in this field working at Clinique Valmont-Genolier.
